Free Internet Access

August 1, 2008
Waiting on some details about the Street Connect Programme.
This is a service developed by Nokia Australia and the Salvation Army's Oasis programme.
The Street Connect van travels around the streets of Sydney and surrounding suburbs, providing free access to mobile phones and Internet equipped laptops.
There's a little bit of information here, but nothing about times and locations.
An e-mail has been sent to Louise Ingram from Nokia Australia asking politely for times and locations.

June 25, 2007
Ahaah! Just read in the news yesterday, that some lucky residents in Perth, W.A., can get access to free Wi-Fi. The Chamber of Minerals & Energy in Western Australia website has more information about exactly where and exactly how to connect to their wireless network.

As of June, 2007, we have found it difficult to find any Australian ISP offering free Internet access.

However, as Wi-Fi equipped computers are becoming more and more common, more and more HotSpots are popping up around the country, a lot of which offer free access.

DSFS's main contributors are working hard on an easy-to-use tutorial/guide on how to find and access these HotSpots. Keep your eyes here or on the home page for updates.

Local Libraries
Most council libraries have Internet facilities, with only a few charging for access. Most just require a booking, and you can surf from half an hour to two hours or more. Check out your local library.
The links provided here will take you to a list of local councils, from there you can navigate to your local library's services page to find out whether they offer free Internet services as a part of membership. Some libraries offer sessions of up to 2 hours if booked in advance.

TPG NiteRider
This service has been discontinued!
TPG used to offer free internet access from 1AM to 8AM. No data limits. Limited to 3 hour sessions. No e-mail or server space with this account.

Note: a link is kept here mostly for the fact that most of the DSFS Team have been using TPG for a very long time.
