Hosts - Stop Banner Ads

This method of stopping banner ads should be illegal, but by golly is it simple!?!

You don't need any third-party software. If you're running a Windows operating system, you already have all that's needed.

It may be a good idea to skip the first step and see if the 2nd step works without having to make any changes to your network settings.

Here's what you're going to do;

First of all, your're going give your computer an alternative Internet address. This will not have an impact on your Internet connection unless you use a 'proxy' server.

The next step will require you to create a simple text file in your c:\windows directory.

Step One: Configure Network Settings.

Open your Control Panel. For Windows ME+ users, click Start, Control Panel. For Win98SE, click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

Find and double click on the 'Network' icon.

This should bring up the Network settings. Click on the 'Configuration' tab.

Click on TCP/IP and click on the Properties button. This may bring up a warning dialog box, click OK.

In the TCP/IP properties box, click on the 'DNS Configuration' tab.

Click on 'Enable DNS' radio button.

Where it says Host, type in 'localhost.'

In 'DNS Server Search Order,' type in the following:
127.0.0.1

Click OK, and then click OK again.

Close your Control Panel.
