Hosts - How does it work?
Page Two
So if you tell your computer that you have an alternate I.P. address, using the hosts file
can redirect your browser to your computer.
What?
images.ads.fairfax.com.au has a unique I.P. address of (ie) 203.1.23.456 (which is different to
www.fairfax.com.au) - put 127.0.0.1 (THREE SPACES)
images.ads.fairfax.com.au in your hosts
file, and you'll never see an advertisement from the Fairfax website again!
That's right!
Whenever you visit a site that loads up an image from images.ads.fairfax.com.au, your computer
will look for the corresponding file on your computer!
Naturally your computer will not find fairfax_ad.jpg at 127.0.0.1!!!
So the image (or any other file) never loads.
It is as simple as that!
This method will certainly cut down on the number of megabytes you download per month.
For those who have their downloads capped, and especially anyone using any one of the current
Australian cable/high-speed Internet providers, you'll appreciate how much more freedom
using this method will give you each month.
And if enough people do this... you just never know... our ISP's might keep our Internet access
rates at a fair price..????????
Happy ad-free surfing.
